An animal isn’t just a gift. Choose responsibly.

Buying animals as Christmas or birthday gifts is still common practice — but it often ends with them being abandoned on the street or left in shelters. What many people don’t realize is that an animal doesn’t just bring joy; it also comes with long-term responsibility and a whole list of duties. That’s why we teamed up with our client VAFO PRAHA s.r.o. and created a campaign to shine a light on this problem.

Getting animals as Christmas or birthday gifts is still a common practice. But it is often wrapped in a romantic idea of joy and surprise, without any real understanding of what that kind of “gift” actually brings. An animal is not a gift. It does not belong in a box, it cannot be put away in a closet and swapped for another later on. And yet, after the holidays, many of them end up abandoned on the street or in shelters, because the initial excitement is replaced by the reality of everyday care and long-term responsibility.

That is exactly the issue we wanted to highlight in the “An Animal Is Not Just a Gift” campaign, which we created together with our client BRIT. Our goal was to open a public debate about the fact that getting a pet is neither an impulsive decision nor a quick fix for a holiday surprise, but a commitment for many years, bringing a whole lot of responsibilities with it.

A strong element of the campaign was a striking outdoor installation in public space. We placed realistic animal sculptures wrapped in Christmas paper in busy locations. The installation played on the contrast between a visually attractive “gift” and its real meaning: a living being that needs long-term care, love, and responsibility.

Each sculpture was accompanied by a tag with the specific needs of the given animal, turning the installation into not only a visually powerful but also an informative element. The outdoor format made it possible to reach a broad audience directly in their natural environment and trigger an immediate reaction, as well as reflection on the fact that an animal is not just a gift.

From the very beginning, though, we conceived the campaign as a fully fledged communication platform that would not stop in public space. The outdoor installation was therefore connected to a digital campaign that carried the topic further online. On social media and in the digital space, we worked with visuals and content building on the campaign’s core message: the decision to get an animal should always be thoughtful and responsible.

An animal is not just a gift. Choose responsibly.
